In the UK alone, 500,000 children go to school hungry each day, and an estimated 870,000 children in England may be going to bed hungry each night. Children need a healthy and nutritious diet in order to grow into healthy adults. We need your help to run a half term holiday club in Wandsworth for children living below the poverty line, where the children will receive the meals that they would otherwise miss during the school holidays, as well as fun educational and cultural activities!
500,000 children across the UK go to school hungry each day. Not only are many children going hungry, but their access to healthy, nutritious food is severely limited, especially for those living on the breadline. One major consequence of food insecurity is ill health and malnutrition, especially amongst those who are forced to buy calorie dense but nutritionally void foods. This exposure risks damaging their prospects of gaining a good education and living a healthy life.
We aim to run a half term holiday club for children living below the poverty line. The club gives children the chance to take part in a range of fun and educational activities such as arts and crafts, dance and cookery. Children will also receive a warm, nutritious meals that they would otherwise miss during the school holidays. This project aims to help create a safe space for kids to thrive in over a two week period so that they can return to school feeling nourished, strong and supported.
Our projects work with up to 250 each week providing them with a source of free healthy nutritious food, mainly sourced from surplus, which enables many families to eat for the rest of the week. With more funding we can provide these adults with cooking lessons enabling families to eat well for a lifetime. We educate up to 50 teenagers every year equipping them skills to shop economically, sustainably and become healthier adults. With more funding we will reach 150 this year.
