Summary

Almost 1/2 of Brazilian teenagers don't finish high school. Quero na Escola improves public education in Brazil by partnering with local communities. We 1)give students voice to express academic interests 2)invite local volunteers to teach 3)organize workshops at local schools. Topics span from gardening to graffiti to LGBTQ. 1 request can become an audience of 100s. We empower students and create engaging learning environments. This project aims to reach 7000 students in schools across Brazil.

Challenge

Public schools struggle to keep students engaged. Brazilian students want to learn but find class material uninteresting. They lack a voice, ownership, to learn about their diverse interests. Locked into strict curricula, teachers cannot address student interests. Schools lack extracurriculars-- sports, theatre troops, debate teams. While communities want to help, they find the walls of public schools uninviting. Communities and schools miss an opportunity in partnering together.

Solution

Quero na Escola gives voice to students and partners with communities. Students express academic interests using our website's request form. Community volunteers offer to teach their talents-- from graffiti to gardening. We match interests and organize free after-school workshops at public schools. One request can attract 100s of students. Communities can invest in youth. Students learn. Our projects will cover materials and outreach for our workshops.

Long-Term Impact

Combining communities and public schools empowers students, teachers, and communities. Students see the community caring to invest in their education; they start to believe in themselves. Teachers feel supported by society. Locals see the impact and importance of contributing to the country's future. Schools become homes of hope, positivity, and engagement. This engagement will lead to the financial and policy prioritization of good public education.
