Provide Scholarships for Two Afghan Girls

Dear Friends,

The school year in Afghanistan is will start in April and as promised, we’re writing to update you on the two female students who received the scholarship that you helped to fund! The girls are called, Shabana and Asma and both are in 8^th Grade and 15 years old. Shabana’s father is a farmer and Asma’s is a general worker. These young girls are attending a private school in Herat Province, thanks to your generosity.

Despite the fact that both girls have fathers who are employed the families were still unable to afford a quality education for their girls without this financial aid. We are delighted that through Global Giving microprojects we will be providing scholarships to private schools this school year to 30 girls and 11 boys.

A staff person reported that, “the students who receive scholarships are all from poor families. Many have lost one or both parents and need to do some work part time to help their families. When they heard they had been given a scholarship they were so happy they became teary eyed. This is what one student said, “I have two sisters, my father is a drug addict and my mother goes to a neighbor to do washing and cleaning. I was not able to pay for tuition or stationary. Thank you for this great opportunity; it has changed my life.”
