Over 80 million Americans travel overseas annually. 8.7 million reside overseas. In an effort to reduce the number of Americans victimized abroad by interpersonal violence, we are partnering with a tech company, LiveSafe, to develop GLOMO - A global mobility app specifically for Americans traveling and living outside of the USA.
GLOMO will provide a robust, and discrete, two-way communication channel between individuals and safety officials. Through GLOMO, individuals can report safety concerns directly to safety officials who monitor the real-time, web-based Command Dashboard. They have readily available access to important resources and can use location tracking in emergency situations. Using SafeWalk, friends or family can invite others to "virtually escort" to their destinations globally.
Students in study-abroad programs would have access to information about specific sexual assault resources in their foreign locations, and international travelers could learn about specific concerns in their destination from our "Know Before You Go" database. All clients could benefit from the app as a means to chat directly with AODVC case managers and from the real-time map SafeWalk feature as a unique security feature.
The project serves 500 women per year empowering them to find alternatives to a life of violence so their children grow up in violence free homes with their self-esteem in tact with the hope of stopping the cycle of violence in future generations.
