This project will purchase 15 piglets for the youth, the nearby secondary school will also benefit as they will learn to operate piggery farms, business, bookkeeping etc. This inclusion in their curriculum will provide greater capacity to not only provide the pupils at that school with a wider education, but more-so almost ensure that on completing their education there that they will have the capacity to earn money as a result of the education
80% of the youth in Kafumu community in Mpigi District have moved to the capital city Kampala to ride motorcycles also known as"bodaboda", 15% are idle due to lack of capital to start up businesses, 3% have been reported being involved in land wrangles with their parents, only 2 % have something to occupy them (Mountains of Hope survey 2013)
Mature pigs will be slaughtered for pork and brought to large markets for sale. 7% of the profits will be put in a Cooperative Bank to generate entrepreneurship and sustainability. When piglets are produced, they will be given to other community members as a revolving scheme thereby increasing the number of youth who benefit
The project is initiated by the youth and the same members are involved in management, this level of involvement and participation of the group members is expected to enhance sustainability. Mountains of Hope in collaboration with the village veterinary officer will build capacities of the group in the management of the project including record keeping and financial management.
