Mammadu currently provides its participants with breakfast, lunch and a snack each day. However, one of our students, who is living with many people in her house, repetitively reports not having meals outside of Mammadu. We want to change that. With this program we will be sending the kids home with a backpack of food to share with their families over the weekend. We hope this will have further impact on their delicate development, as well as their ability to engage in school and activities.
Mammadu is situated in the middle of an informal settlement. There is vast unemployment and as a result poverty is rampant. Unfortunately, this primarily affects the children. Fortunately, for the kids of Mammadu, they receive healthy meals when they are attending Mammadu. But what about the the evening meals and the meals on weekend/school holidays? This project will help to alleviate the hunger felt by the Mammadu kids and their families during out-of-program times.
The Meal-In-A-Backpack program will allow us to send healthy food home with the kids on Fridays. The food will be enough for their families to prepare at least 2 meals per day during the weekends and on public holidays when Mammadu is closed. This will not only help to alleviate the hunger of our students, but also their entire household.
Providing our community with proper nutrition will hopefully allow our students to focus and get better grades in school. It could also help their older family/household members to have the physical strength to be productive and provide better care for our students.
