Dear Friends,
It is with great enthusiasm that we write to tell you that with your help we raised enough funds to open the Julia Alvarez Children's Library at The Mariposa Center for Girls here in the Dominican Republic!
Just last month we completed the space by painting murals, building bookshelves and ordering locally made furniture. We had a student group visiting all the way from Canada that stocked our shelves with tons of books! We are still building our collection and our girls are thrilled to have a beautiful library to read, study and explore. In our small, rural community finding books is very difficult. The children do not have any of their own and the schools have very few that are often not in great condition.
In a place where there are no books, your contributions to our library helps foster a love of reading for poor girls. Young children who have access to books are more excited and motivated to learn. Literacy teacher, Mary Jane Garcia notes, "Since we opened the library, the girls are so curious to dive right into the books! They no longer see the literacy class as work, but as a chance to explore their interests and get lost in the many stories on the shelves."
Because of your generousity, our girls will have a safe and beautiful space to read, learn and grow. We thank you for your continuous support!
With gratitude,
The girls, staff and volunteers at The Mariposa DR Foundation
