South Florida Student Entrepreneurship Takes Off

Unfortunately, NFTE South Florida’s project to fund a summer BizCamp did not hit our funding goal.  Thanks so much to those who did donate, we appreciate all the efforts you have made to bring our students entrepreneurial dreams to life.  Even without reaching our goal on GlobalGiving, the South Florida BizCamp went forward as planned.  Today’s youth need a mindset that equips them to recognize opportunity, take initiative, and innovate in the face of challenges.  Our summer BizCamp serves as a two week entrepreneurship crash course, as students use their newly learned lessons to further the creation of their own business plan.  Under the guidance of a certified NFTE teacher, these students broaden their horizons and strengthen their entrepreneurial ventures with the support of volunteers who lend their guidance with business development and financial advice.

One of the most innovate business plans to emerge from the South Florida BizCamp was founded by Alyssa B. and Aviva G. of Plantation, Florida. Alyssa was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes over six years go.  Living with the pain of pricking herself several times a day to keep her blood sugar levels regulated inspired her to be a part of the solution for all diabetics with the same daily pain.  So Alyssa and Aviva came together to found BloodBand – a diabetes tool which “…does not require any subcutaneous or repetitive treatment to the skin…” with the ingenious use of a laser.  While their time in the NFTE program helped them develop their business idea, they feel it has also taught them a lot about communication and collaboration.  “We treat this business like a true partnership and communicate about everything.  Even if you’re not interested in starting up your own business, [NFTE] still teaches you other important skills for school and life later on”.  Both girls plan to attend college in a few years.

Thank you again for your contributions to NFTE through the GlobalGiving platform!  Your contributions are helping students like Alyssa and Aviva fully realize the potential of their entrepreneurial mindset.
