Since the beginning of the first school term in January 2013, students at St. Vincent’s Nursery School had been sharing with the teachers that they are hungry when they come to school each morning. Some of the children were unable to join the class until they received their porridge, a meal intended to be given in the late morning.
Due to rampant inflation and the rising cost of living in Kenya, many families served by St. Vincent’s have had a hard time providing food for their families. Many of the parents of the nursery school students have admitted that the only sure meals their children can depend on are the ones served at the school. With the support of the GlobalGiving holiday food basket microproject, St. Vincent’s was able to surprise families with an Easter package in April 2013. The school provided food packages that would last the families the entire 5-day Easter holiday. The nutritious package included two kilograms of rice, beans, maize, green grams (vegetables), maize flour and porridge flour.
To ensure that each household received its package, each parent was invited to pick up their portion from school. No parent missed this opportunity and some were even accompanied by their neighbors who hoped to benefit from any leftovers the organization had. The parents were very grateful and thanked St. Vincent’s for providing them with food at a time they desperately needed it.
On behalf of the children and community members that St. Vincent’s serves, we would like to pass our appreciation to GlobalGiving for providing the opportunity to support our community with funds contributed by kind donors. We would also like to extend our appreciation to each and every person who made a contribution to make the ‘Holiday Food Basket for Vulnerable Families’ a reality. Thank you all and may you be blessed.
