The project will support 5 aspiring vulnerable youth from Kibera to obtain a college education - an extremely rare opportunity for youth here where the population lives on less than $2 per day and just half of school-age youth reach secondary school. With your support, these 5 students (3 girls, 2 boys) will be supported to attend colleges in Kenya.
Mary, Maureen, Venesa, Levix and Dennis never thought attending college was even a remote possibility. All youth have been supported to attend high school through St. Vincent's scholarship program and all are either enrolled in or have been accepted to colleges in Kenya in the last year. But costs of attending college are far out of reach for households in Kibera. Through scholarships, this project will enable these students to pursue an almost unheard of dream.
The project will provide 5 youth with funding to cover tuition and other school costs of attending college, for example housing, food, textbooks, registration fees, transport costs and lab fees. Dennis is at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology studying IT. Maureen is at US International University studying diplomacy, Levix and Venesa are studying to become teachers at Tangaza Teacher's College. Mary will also enroll in a teacher's college in 2016.
This microproject will enable these 5 students to pursue their education dreams and pave their own way out of poverty. Maureen, Venesa, Levix, Dennis and Mary all come from extremely difficult backgrounds, have overcome significant odds by completing high school and now look forward to bigger and better things!. Through pursuit of a college education, these students will have greater opportunities to find viable employment and care for themselves and their families in the future.
