Dear Supporters of Our School,
Thank you so much for your really wonderful and generous help to repair our roof.
Although we did not raise our original goal of $10,000 and we could not do the extensive restoration that we had hoped for, we still were able to do the following vital repair work:-
° Removed all old, broken tiles
° Replaced rotten wood beams where the rain water had got through - with new wood beams,
° Put new tiles to replace the missing and broken ones.
You will see that in some photos there are still tiles with dark litchen on them. With more funding we would have been able to replace these as well, but for now they are still in good condition and keep the rain out. In the future we will raise more funds to maintain our roof in a good state.
Some time was taken before we were able to start repairs, because I also raised a little more funds by giving concerts. We then had to wait while we ordered new roof tiles from Vietnam, because nobody makes these kinds of tiles in Cambodia anymore!
After the original estimate given by the building company, they decided that they did not want to climb up the roof anymore. We therefore interviewed nearly ten companies to find the right one with people who were specialised in high-roof climbing and who would wear security ropes. Security and building skills in Cambodia are still quite rudimentary, so it was all quite a challenge.
Now we have a safe, leak-proof roof and the structure of our main hall is saved and our children and staff can now study and work safely.
Our main hall is considered an icon by Cambodian people and a symbol of their culture, once nearly lost to the Khmer Rouge genocide. So it is much more to them than a school or a performance hall, it repesents their cultural identity.
Thank you so much for making this possible and helping us restore such an important building, giving back to our children and future generations the possibility to continue studying and performing there.
