Many families live in extreme poverty in Freetown. Most of them struggle to meet the daily needs of their families. This is truly a wonderful way to meet their most basic, essential and immediate need - daily food. Healthy meals are essential for children to grow up strong and become healthy adults. Your support will ensure that these deserving children and families do not have to skip a meal or go to bed hungry.
According to the UN, Sierra Leone ranks close to the bottom of the Human Development Index. More than half of its population lives on less than US$1.90 a day. Nearly half the population is food insecure. Almost half of all child deaths in Sierra Leone are attributable to malnutrition, the single greatest cause of child mortality in the country. Families cannot afford the fortified foods needed to save their children.
This project will provide food and healthy nutritious meals to these families. Adequate nutrition helps the children focus better in school and their bodies are more resistant to sickness and disease. The food that will be provided includes items from the main food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods (fish, bread, eggs, fish, peanut butter, rice, vegetables, dairy etc.). This provides balanced and diverse nutrients that they need to be healthy and strong.
The project is an effective long-term investment that will help provide quality educational opportunities for more youths and young adults so that they can rise above poverty and become better decision makers. This project offers tremendous benefits in terms of helping these deserving children grow and mature into healthy adults. We are convinced that they will impact their communities and nation - and even the world.
