Empowering Lina: The Impact of Your Support

By Claudia Estrada | Executive Director

Thanks to your support, Lina is preparing to receive her new prosthesis

Thanks to the generosity of our GlobalGiving donors, United for Colombia has successfully raised the funds needed to provide Lina with a new prosthesis that will help restore her mobility and independence.

Lina lives in Buenaventura, Colombia. She lost her left leg as a baby during a combat between the Colombian Army and the FARC. Despite this traumatic start in life, Lina has built a remarkable future. Today she is a preschool teacher, a wife, and the mother of a baby girl.

Since childhood, Lina has depended on a prosthetic leg to walk, work, and live independently. However, prosthetic limbs require periodic replacement to function properly. Lina’s previous prosthesis had reached the end of its useful life, making daily movement increasingly difficult and unsafe.

Thanks to your support, we were able to raise the funds needed to provide Lina with a new prosthesis with improved technology that will allow her to walk safely, continue working, and care for her child.

Current Progress

Lina has already begun the first phase of her rehabilitation in Buenaventura, where she lives. She is currently receiving physical therapy to prepare her body for the prosthetic fitting process.

This stage is essential to strengthen muscles, improve balance, and ensure a successful adaptation to the new prosthesis.

What Happens Next

In March, Lina will travel to Medellín, where she will spend several weeks completing the prosthetic fitting and rehabilitation process with specialized medical professionals.

During this stage, Lina will receive her new prosthesis and undergo intensive physical therapy to learn how to safely adapt to the device and regain confidence in her mobility.

Lina’s Voice

"This prosthesis means I can keep walking beside my daughter as she grows. It allows me to continue working, caring for my family, and living independently."

The Impact of Your Support

Your generosity is helping Lina move forward, literally and figuratively. This new prosthesis will allow her to continue teaching young children, caring for her baby, and living with dignity and independence.

Stories like Lina’s remind us that access to rehabilitation is not only about mobility, it is about opportunity, dignity, and hope.
