This urgent microproject will help families begin post-fire recovery by restoring priority areas, supporting natural regeneration, replanting where needed, and strengthening community-led protection so the forest can recover and become more resilient to future fires.
A wildfire has severely damaged the Choras forest restoration area in Peru, reversing years of recovery work. Burned vegetation and damaged habitat now threaten natural regeneration, biodiversity, and the rural families whose restoration work provides local income. Without timely action, degraded areas face greater soil erosion, slower forest recovery, and increased vulnerability to future fires.
This microproject will launch an urgent first phase of post-wildfire recovery. Local families and our field team will assess priority areas, protect surviving vegetation, support natural regeneration, replant native species where needed, and monitor recovery. Funds will also support local restoration work and practical measures to reduce future fire risk, helping the forest recover with stronger community stewardship.
Post-fire restoration will help Choras recover as a healthier, more resilient forest while protecting habitat, soils, and the ecosystem services rural communities depend on. By engaging local families in restoration, monitoring, and fire-risk reduction, the project will strengthen local stewardship and livelihoods. The work will also create a foundation for continued recovery through the long-term parent project.
