Thanks to top–notch people and generous donations, people from rural Nicaragua are having a great chance to change their quality of life. Here is the experience and benefits of the communities Melchorita and El Espavel that overcame their water issues with assistance from Self-Help International.

Melchorita and El Espavel is a rural area of San Carlos -Rio San Juan with 893 people which used to have a running water system without any treatment. Even though the leaders of the communities tried several times to obtain one system to clean their water, it had been a hard process. The raw water had presence of fecal residuals that was causing waterborne diseases which would be preventable with proper water purification.

After several attempts with other systems to chlorinate the water and having failed, the CAPS committee turned to Self-Help International to have a chlorinator installed, as well as to receive technical training on how to manage the system and improve its performance. services to the community.

The program technician made several previous visits to the installation. Costs incurred during these visits include fuel, maintenance and/or repair of the motorcycle used by the technician, and food. A study has to be done first to see if it is feasible to install a chlorinator in the requested area since many times they lack viable infrastructure for this type of chlorination system including the scope of water resources, storage and quantity. Once all this has been studied and analyzed by Orlando from Self-Help International and at least one CAPS member of the community, the chlorinator was installed using PVC materials. This equipment was very easy to install, handle and accessible to the community.

.
After the installation of the chlorinator, people could see the difference between the water they were drinking infected with fecal bacteria and the new chlorinated water. During the installation, Self-Help also discovered that only 65% of the homes has access to water. The CAPS members talked with the Self-Help International technician about the intervention of the chlorinator and the use of chlorine tablets.  The people could see the benefit of water reaching the entire population and the importance of treating the water (purified). People could see the difference -  especially in the classrooms, since the children could drink the water without any problem, without being afraid that they will get sick. They also didn't have to carry water from other places so now 200 students in the elementary school have access to clean water.

Despite the fact that this chlorinator looks simple in its structure, it is also easy to handle and Orlando, the clean water program officer from Self-Help, was able to build trust in the community and provide people with the technical and educational support to always keep their chlorination system in good condition.

Thanks to all lof the support given to people to improve their lives here in the remote zone of Nicaragua.
