More than girls and women lack access to financial capital and have limited opportunities to gain knowledge and skills that can lead to economic advancement. The girls have faced significant barriers in accessing the essential services and information before COVID-19 crisis and now a midst the pandemic, there is a real risk that these services and information will move further from reach.

During the lock down, many families have married off young girls in exchange for money and material items due to raise in poverty, high rates of teenage pregnancy due to redundancy while others are taken advantage of by the boys and men who use them in the name of offering money to enable them meet their personal needs like sanitary pads. Information, programs and services that protect young girls are vital. In order to avoid a devasting impact on the future of millions of girls, Another Hope Children’s Ministries started a program of Girl Child Protection Through Skill Training where we trained eleven young girls.

These were trained in Hairdressing and cosmetology, tailoring and fashion designing and cookery, bakery and pastry. Majority of the girls (82%) offered Hair Dressing and Cosmetology. The young girls were trained so that they can earn some money and meet their needs which saves them from the risks of being misled by men with cheap items. This was possible through your support and we are so grateful for your generosity.

Testimony

The beneficiary is a young girl who says her mind set was changed after going through the training. Having taken on the opportunity to be trained in hairdressing and cosmetology, the beneficiary learnt different hairstyles like twist, wash and set, dread locks and triple three. This has enabled her get clients to work on and pay her some money. The beneficiary says she is no longer worried about straining her grandmother with meeting her needs because she can meet them herself from the money she makes. She has purchased new clothes and clothes for herself. One of the ideas for survival according to the young beneficiary was having a boyfriend who could meet some of her financial which is not the case today because she makes her own money. From the money she gets, she saves some which will be her pocket money when schools open officially opens.

Your support has save this young lady from the dangers of teenage pregnancy and possibilities of getting married at an early age
