Dear Friends,
Because of your support we are happy to report that we have hired a full time librarian to join our staff at The Mariposa Center for Girls! It is with great pleasure that we introduce to you Mary Jane Garcia Infante. Mary Jane hails from Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominican Republic. She recently graduated from university with a degree in communication and also studied early childhood education. She has been working in various schools and literacy programs for several years and, also fluent in English, is a Spanish as a foreign language teacher!
In February we opened the "Julia Alvarez Children's Library" at The Mariposa Center for Girls and over the past few months, Mary Jane has been instrumental in getting everything set up and organized in the new space. In her role as literacy coordinator and librarian, she works daily with the Mariposa girls in small groups to improve their reading, critical thinking and creative writing skills. Mary Jane is passionate about helping children develop a love of books and believes it is important to find ways to make reading fun! "I love to encourage the girls to use their imagination", says Mary Jane, "reading allows children to discover the world, think creatively and experience the power of knowledge". The girls are very much enjoying having a beautiful space, dedicated to reading and having Mary Jane there everyday to help them improve their skills.
We look forward to sharing more updates with you throughout the year. These amazing things are only possible because of thoughtful, generous people like you and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
With gratitude,
The girls, families, volunteers and staff at The Mariposa DR Foundation
