At the Mariposa Center for Girls we have the space for a large children's library and have been working very hard to stock our shelves! However, even with all the books they need, the girls still have difficultly choosing what to read or finding information needed for school projects. We are currently looking for funding to employ a full time librarian to serve as a homework helper and a research assistant. Additionally, she will be able to foster a lifelong love of learning in the Mariposas!
The Mariposa DR Foundation has been working very hard to create a youth library, but we are finding that even when the girls have access to the books they need they are still unable to choose books at their level. This means the girls are not improving their reading skills because they are either reading at a level too high or too low. Additionally, when the Mariposas are asked to complete research for school they are confused about where to begin and need significant assistance.
By funding this project, the Mariposa DR Foundation will be able to hire and employ a full-time librarian. This individual will provide the girls with the critical reading skills they need to continue to succeed in their studies as well as teach the skills and strategies needed in higher education. Additionally, a librarian would be able to evaluate the reading levels of all the girls to provide them with reading help and suggestions to become better readers.
By fostering a love of reading we are ensuring that our girls will be lifelong learners. Their reading levels and reference skills will increase, and the success they experience in school will motivate them to continue their education. The girls will also be able to see the value of reading and pass that love on to their younger siblings, which will ensure that even more children in the community are literate and continuing their educations in an effort to end generational poverty.
