This project will facilitate a five days youth conference to address health issues surrounding the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Mpigi District. Although a lot has been done,the District is still challenged with the high prevalence which is above the National average of 7.3%.The prevalence for the Central 1 region is estimated at 10.6%,while in Mpigi District the ANC weighted prevalence stands at 8% (UNAIS, 2011). The sero-positivity rate according to the DHIS 2 report 2015/16 is at 5.3%.
There is arising HIV infection among teenagers aged 15-17 years, 1.6% of the girls are infected compared to 1.8% of the boys; the percentage more than doubles when it comes to the 18-19 years age bracket with 5.1% girls infected compared to the 1.5% of the boys.The high rate of new infections especially among girls aged 20-21 years is at the higher education institutions because of the social networks that encourage cross-generational sexual relationships
This project will organize a five days participatory workshop for youth going to school, right from higher Primary, secondary schools to higher institutions of learning. World AIDS day 2016 theme was "Hands up for HIV Prevention". The campaign looked at ways to improve prevention strategies, identifying key areas among specific groups of people who are vulnerable to transmission - adolescent girls and young women in particular.
