Summary

This project will ensure that Maisha moms can give birth safely in private hospitals despite the indefinite public hospital strike in Kenya. Instead of facing the risks of home births or inadequate care, they will receive proper medical attention, reducing maternal and infant mortality risks. This project covers the safe delivery at the Nairobi Women's Hospital for 8 women and 3 emergencies, like c-section or babys hospitalization.

Challenge

Nairobi's public hospitals are currently on indefinite strike, so Maisha mothers cannot give birth there. Without access to affordable public healthcare, these vulnerable women face the risk of giving birth at home or in inadequate conditions, increasing the chances of complications, infections, and even maternal or infant mortality. By funding deliveries in private hospitals, this project ensures they receive the medical care they need for a safe and healthy birth.

Solution

The project will cover the costs of childbirth in private hospitals for Maisha moms (24.000 Kes = 192 USD per mom). Since public hospitals are on an indefinite strike, private healthcare is the only safe option, but it is significantly more expensive, especially if a c-section or hospitalization of the baby is required (4-day hospitalization 106,000 Kes = 850 USD). The funds raised will pay for all medical expenses ensuring that each mother and baby receives proper medical attention.

Long-Term Impact

A safe and healthy pregnancy, childbirth and first months of life contribute to reducing the maternal and neonatal mortality rate. Our program seeks to impact the lives of 20 women and their children annually, contributing to the general health in Kibera, which will ultimately impact better social, health, educational and economic development in the long term for these families and their community.
