Public school in Cambodia consists of route learning with creativity being stifled. Our art classes at Human and Hope Association aim to address this, with weekly lessons using encouraging the students to think outside of the box and let the creative juices flow. This program increases their confidence and their originality. The students who attend are aged between three and 16.
Our art classes are held each Sunday by our Education and Library Assistant and our Sustainability Assistant. We often use recycled materials to reduce our impact on the environment and show the children that they can be creative at their own homes. After making a craft, often in teams, we have hygiene time and then the students watch a movie in English. Afterwards they receive a piece of fruit to munch on, sometimes grown at HHA, sometimes purchased at the local market.
When we first began art class most students were too shy to attend as they said they didn't have the ability to be creative. With perseverance we have showed them that they DO have the ability, and we display their art work in our study area at HHA to instil a sense of pride and achievement in them.
