Over the past few months we fundraised part of the budget for our microproject “Employ 10 Underprivileged High School Seniors!”. This allowed us to carry out several initiatives aimed at helping the underprivileged youths gain practical skills and confidence. Together with 12 high school juniors and seniors, we attended a career and professional development fair in March. The youths had the opportunity to meet employers from different industries and to receive advice on how to pick and choose a job, and how to prepare their job application. Going over the feedback we received from the fair, we discovered most atendees needed a more practically oriented and individual approach in order to prepare a successful job application.

Therefore, later on, in April, together with our volunteers we brainstormed some ideas and we developed a series of workshops, designed to prepare the youths for entering the labor market and real life in general. The focus of the workshops is on teaching employability skills, however they also cover related topics such as financial literacy, labor rights and digital skills. After the first workshop in early May, designed to teach the youths on how to write a successful curriculum vitae, two of our youths found jobs. One of them, Ivan, who applied for a position in a restaurant during the workshop, was offered the job only two days latter! Another youth, Andrey, received a job offer from a sporting goods store.

Since the workshop, we continue to contact new employers and to link them to youths searching for a job. We also plan on conducting the rest of the workshops that we have developed together with our volunteers.

We would like to express our gratitude to all of you who supported our microproject. We shall continue to spread the results of our efforts towards providing undeprivileged youths with the necessary support so that they can enter the labour market and gain their social and economic independence.

With gratitude,

The Step for Bulgaria Foundation's team
