Eldercare in Honduras Shutins

In the states it is unusual to find a elderly person living on their own that can not care for even basic needs. We have care facilities and people we can hire to help, as well as family that can take turns with the care. In Honduras, it is not that simple. The children of the elderly and friends, more often than not, can not feed themselves, much less feed a elderly person. 

We have found many such people in the district where we live. Many live on the top of mountains without roads or vehicles as the land is less expensive in locations that are not convenient for living. These people have aged quietly without help for years and find themselves no longer able to care for themselves or each other. They can not walk to the store or medical care when needed. 

We have really enjoyed finding these people and bringing them companionship, attention, food, medicine and house visits. Sometimes it takes all day to find just 3 people. Often it is a difficult hike for those of us that can still walk. It is worth the walk to see their faces when someone shows up out of the clear blue sky to give them something they need. 

This year we want to focus on regular monthly visits to be sure they never go very long with out what they need. We were pleased recently to see some of the people had family visiting but again, not able to help much as they are in same financial condition. These contacts were invaluable as we can have them come by the clinic to take medicine to the elderly loved one when they run out. 

We also want to help them with projects around the home. Building shelves, bringing a chair or a blanket for the cold.
