In support of International Day of the Girl 2021, you can be part of transforming the lives of 330 girls in Tanzania by removing one more obstacle to education - the dark! How? By giving the gift of light! 60% of the Tanzanian population live in energy poverty. In Tanzania, over 85% of girls aged 15-24 are illiterate and just 33% of secondary school aged girls attend school. Education is the key to breaking the devastating intergenerational cycle of poverty into which many girls are born.
Currently one third of girls in Tanzania are married by 18 and have on average 5.7 children. Educated girls are healthier, have decent jobs, fewer children and marry later, all which contribute to a prospering society and eradiating poverty in all its forms. We believe that girls who want an education are unstoppable, some simply need a helping hand to get there. You can directly give girls the opportunity to be world changers by giving them the gift of light.
When girls have the opportunity to learn they can make informed choices about their health and welfare, are empowered to challenge gender stereotypes that have persisted for generations and gain the skills needed to find decent work to reach their full potential. Educating girls is life changing for girls and by reaping economic growth, game changing for society. Typically every additional year of primary school increases girls eventual wages by 10-20 percent (UN).
A SolarBuddy solar light illuminates futures. Gifted specifically to children so they can study after dusk, a solar light will also do so much more. It improves safety, hygiene and health - children no longer need to breathe in toxic fumes. Currently more children die per annum from indoor air pollution than from AIDS & malaria combined. It is purpose designed for children and for extreme and remote environments. It will last 10 years so can take the children through their schooling.
