Donate a Refractometer & Save 90 k Sights Annually

Summary

Al-Mustafa Hospital's free eye OPD serves 250 poor patients daily-90,000 annually. Our only Auto Kerato-Refractometer, essential for every eye exam and cataract surgery, is broken. Without it, patients cannot get accurate glasses prescriptions, and cataract surgeries cannot proceed safely. This microproject will replace the machine, restoring full OPD capacity immediately. One new machine means 90,000 sights saved yearly. 18,000 cataract surgeries enabled. 450,000 lives transformed over 5 years.

Challenge

Al-Mustafa Hospital's free OPD sees 250 patients daily, but its only Auto Kerato-Refractometer is broken. This machine is essential for measuring refractive errors (glasses prescriptions) and corneal curvature (critical for cataract surgery lens calculation). Without this machine, patients cannot get accurate glasses. Cataract surgeries cannot be safely performed. Manual refraction takes 15 minutes per patient-impossible for 250 daily. Patients are turned away.

Solution

This microproject purchases and installs a new Auto Kerato-Refractometer at Al-Mustafa Hospital within days of funding. The machine automates refraction-measuring myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism in 2 minutes (vs. 15 minutes manually). It performs keratometry for precise cataract surgery lens power. It has cataract mode for cloudy eyes. It eliminates human error with 99% accuracy. Result: 250 patients served daily, saving up to 90,000 sights every year.

Long-Term Impact

This machine will serve Al-Mustafa Hospital for 5-7 years, transforming countless lives. Long-term impact: 450,000+ patients served over its lifetime. 90 K sights saved yearly. 18 K cataract surgeries enabled annually. Children will read, adults will work, elders will see grandchildren. Families escape poverty caused by blindness. The real impact is beyond numbers. This machine is a long-term, self-sustaining asset, creating ripples that will be felt for generations.
