African Health Now plans to create an emergency fund to support the Madina Polyclinic-Kekele in Accra, Ghana. The clinic provides primary care, and maternal and reproductive health care services to women. The clinic was greatly impacted by COVID-19, causing a reduction in crucial resources rendering the clinic to operate at reduced capacity. With the emergency fund, African Health Now will be able to support the clinic by replenishing resources and restoring the quality in the delivery of care.
COVID-19 forced clinics and health programs to pause or operate at reduced capacity in Ghana, yielding an increase in demand for services, a reduction in resources, and overburdening of staff. Many pregnant women had concerns about the impact of COVID-19 on their unborn child's health, in addition to experiencing less than ideal situations with accessing food, healthcare, and loss of income. The project will support approx. 200 women with basic necessities and access to health services.
This fund will provide pantry bags that will include hygiene items, create 200 of AHN's signature Maternity Go-Boxes, and provide small stipends to approx. 200 women. The fund will also support the procurement of medical equipment and supplies, including personal protective equipment (PPE) for clinic and program staff, as well as support the continuation of the pregnancy school program, and the facilitation of access to quality maternal and reproductive healthcare services.
The project will ensure that 200 women continue to receive quality maternal and reproductive healthcare services, and support continued engagement in the Pregnancy School Program . This project's impact works toward preventing setbacks from maternal and infant mortality reduction in Ghana and increasing survival and promotion of expecting mothers and their infants' health and well-being.
