Computer Lab set to open Fall 2018

By Diana Richardson | Executive Director

Thanks to you, the children of Makindu will start learning precious necessary computer and keyboarding skills this fall, coinciding with the return to school. Accomplishments to date:

  • 7 or 10 laptops have been delivered. The remaining 3 will be delivered in September. With Kenyan corruption commonplace, we hesitate to mail or courier something so valuable. Therefore we are sending them over in carryon baggage of Makindu supporters and visitors.
  • Windows and Office have been installed on all the laptops.
  • 4 Samsung tablets were also delivered and are currently being used by the preschool children. We loaded the tablets with preschool curriculum apps. When the Computer Lab opens, the older students will also have access to the tablets.
  • Apps that complement the Kenyan state curriculum will also be loaded onto the laptops and tablets to assist in the educational requirements, research and  homework.
  • The electrical system has been upgraded in the identified Computer Lab room.
  • Benches and tables have been built and installed.
  • Mice and other accessories have been delivered.
  • Staff have developed curriculum goals, and will measure and evaluate progress on a quarterly basis.

The last piece we are currently working out is the best way to provide reliable internet connection, with a trustworthy internet service provider.

This computer lab will provide learning opportunities to 520+ orphaned and vulnerable children, increasing their chance to succeed in today's computer-driven world. Most of these children don't have electricity or plumbing in their homes, so having a home computer is not possible. We are thrilled that you have given us the funds to provide computer access to these kids.

Asante sana!
