Thank you GlobalGiving Donors for successfully funding Asia America Initiative to provide two new water tanks and materials to build hand-washing stations at two new elementary schools in the Sulu region of the Philippines. The new items were in received and cemented in place by parent volunteers at the start of the school year which began in June 2019.

Jolo is the largest island in Sulu Province in the impoverished and conflict-torn region of Muslim Mindanao. The lack of clean water for drinking and hand-washing is a major cause of illness, especially intestinal parasites and nutritional disorders for children in tropical areas of the world. The resulting illnesses are a major cause of children to be absent from school and to perform poorly due to malnutrition, fever and poor concentration. The United Nations rates Sulu Province, Philippines near the bottom of global human development surveys. This program improves public health and education needed for social-economic development.

'Our accessibility to clean water from rain fall or pumped from deep wells in the surrounding forests has made a tremendous improvement in the health and well-being of our school children," says Principal Kauzar of Manilop Village Elementary School in rural Indanan District.  "Two years ago we could not dream of having such an essential component to the all-around health and education environment in our school." To supplement hand washing, Asia America Initiative has provided hand soaps and tooth brushes to Manilop and the other 17 schools in the Indanan South school district.

Even though this Asia America Initiative micro-project has ended, you might want to continue your support with our long term clean water and WASH projects. Monthly contributions are a great way to help us meet our budgetary goals to expand good hygiene to many. For all of 2019, GlobalGiving is providing matching funds for new recurring donations - you can support OUR communities and double your impact!  Follow the link and select the Donate Now button. (Be sure to select "monthly" if you are interested in a recurring donation.) Thank you!
