This program helps students "get the basics" of water ecosystems and issues, then connect those issues to similar ones in their own lives to make sure the lessons they learn stay with them. RiverKids in the classroom brings water quality education to life through hands-on, locally-relevant learning. We will present this program to 15 classrooms in the Neuse River Basin and reach over over 250 school kids.
All too often teachers do not have enough time to properly cover environmental and local water education. On average over 50% of the classroom that we speak to have never head of the Neuse River and have no idea where there drinking water comes from. Through this program the kids come away with a better understanding of their environment and there water. They also learn that they can make a difference when it comes to water conservation and water quality.
This project will get our message to more youth and help us create the next generation of environmental protectors. The more youth that leave school with a better understanding of local water issues the better our environment and water resources will be.
We strive to create the next generation of environmental stewards that will protect safe, clean water, and a love for our natural resources which are the building blocks in the foundation of vibrant local economies and healthy communities. Our vision is to foster communities where students, teachers, parents, administrators, and community members realize that engagement in real environmental problem solving is an essential component of both education and community involvement.
