A Primary School in Cherlapally near Hyderabad has never had toilets for the teachers as well as students. The students have to go long distances to find open spaces to relieve themselves. The plight of the girls is unimaginable. Your support will build 6-8 toilets in the school. This project will have long term impact on more than 250 children for at least 20 years.
The school was built in 1960s but does not have a single restroom. The children have to go to the nearby open places to relieve themselves. It is extremely unsafe for girls as they are heckled by miscreants in the village. Many children do not drink adequate water because there is no toilet. In spite of appeals to Government authorities, local leaders and local businesses, there has been no response. Even the teachers have no restrooms for themselves. They are forced to go to nearby houses.
The project will construct 6-8 child-friendly toilets in the school. Children will have proper sanitation facilities just like any private school does. We will connect water from nearby water sources using water supply pipes. Children need not think twice before drinking sufficient water to quench their thirst. Girls need not dread coming to school.
Providing hygiene and sanitation facilities in school will create an enabling school environment and children's regularity to school will be improved. Awareness of hygiene and sanitation will increase and children will have fewer instances of illness. Drop out rate, especially among girls will come down.
