As early as March, our Tousna Study Centre had been completely reconstructed and its doors opened for a special launch event. We welcomed local dignitaries and leaders from the educational sector to celebrate this new learning facility, a first for the community of Asni.
The facility was first developed to provide Asni secondary school students with a safe and quiet revision space. Unfortunately, following the earthquake that struck Morocco in September 2023, all students have been relocated temporarily to the outskirts of Marrakech whilst the long path to rebuilding schools gets underway.
Our target is now firmly focussed on rebuilding schools in the region which have no other funding source. We are concentrating on providing children and young people with learning materials, well-equipped temporary classrooms and safe play spaces.
It is still our vision to transform a piece of land adjacent to the centre into an outdoor activity space, however whilst the students are learning away from home, we are diverting funds from this project to help purchase the learning resources and materials which will enable them to continue their studies without further disruption.
In the meantime, our centre in the High Atlas Mountains has become a space for the local community to host a variety of workshops and events. From women’s theatre workshops to school awards ceremonies, weekly technology training sessions for primary school students and an extensive reference library for students returning home, the centre is now an established hub.
With a dedicated administrative board on the ground and a strong partnership with Asni Lycée, we are already setting a path forward towards a more inclusive and dynamic learning community. We look forward to developing the activity and wellbeing space in the future.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to give the students of Asni improved outcomes in their studies despite the challenges they have faced. We are truly grateful.
