Thank you for making this very special micro-project to help bring Valeria to school a wonderful success.
With your help, and the help of others, Escuela de Educación Especial de San Miguel de Allende has exceeded its target of raising almost US$5,000 to cover the costs of bringing Valeria and her sister (who must accompany her) from home to school and back again for one whole year. As you know Valeria lives in a rural community outside of Dolores Hidalgo. Getting to school involves an early morning rise to catch a ride to the city to then catch the bus to San Miguel de Allende, all taking approximately two hours.
You will see from Valeria's smiling face she loves attending school, making new friends and learning Mexican Sign Language. She is an enthusiastic learner and will soon be able to communicate with her school mates and teachers. As her communication skills improve she will be challenged to move forward in her academic classes, learning to read and write Spanish and learning arithmatic.
As a side note, Valeria's sister Citlali, an adolocent who is hearing, is making good use of her time while waiting for Valeria to finish class and accompany her home. She has chosen to participate in the special computer program offered to the older deaf students. While atttending the computer program, her deaf classmates have offered to teach her some basic sign language. Sign language skills will be invaluable allowing Valeria to communicate with her sister and her family at home. Win, win.
