Participant Background: Girls from the slum and shanties, railway lines squatters of Kolkata.

Skill Building Training & Empowerment Center– the first training salon with modern amenities and facilities at par aligning to Industry Standards in the community. No other salon or training center in the radius of 5 Kms. Women have always been subjected to household work. In India, the context of women working is a very challenging issue. Tiljala SHED is working in the shanties for the past three decades to up lift the status of women in the society. Societal restrictions are very strong for women in the area of our operations but Tiljala SHED have been able to break the stereotype and young girls and women have been receiving this training for the past one year which brought few females to learn the skill and earn their income and respect in the family. Now these trained professionals are earning and contributing to the family which has eventually bought respect for the female gender. They are independent and taking their own decisions in the family.

Distinctive Characteristics: Saloni Beauty Training & Empowerment Center has in-house salons and spa facilities where learners undertake work placements. Learners also contribute their skills for expos, school productions, shows, open days and community.

Quality Assurance History: At the most recent external evaluation and review (EER) in mid-September 2017, SBTEC was confident in both the educational performance and capability in self-assessment of Ishrat Ansar (Ishrat’s Hair, Skin & Make-up Studio) and Godrej Consumer Products Ltd.

Scope of External Evaluation and Review: A pre-scoping meeting was conducted by the lead evaluator several weeks before the on-site phase of the EER. At this meeting, the lead evaluator met the management and staff, had a tour of the facilities, and confirmed the agenda for the EER. The programme focus areas selected were: Ishrat’s Hair, Skin & Make-up Studio and Godrej Consumer Products Ltd.

Conduct of External Evaluation and Review: All external evaluation and reviews are conducted in accordance with SBTEC published policies and procedures. An extensive range of documentation was reviewed, including: the self-assessment provided pre-EER as per the guidelines of Saloni Programme; minutes of management, board and staff meetings; teacher folders, lesson plans, and records of student attendance; staff professional development logs; records of internal and external moderation; and the quality management system.

Impact: Livelihood option for the girls who never step ahead from the community circle. This intense training has changed their aptitude and style. Now they are the community leader who are empowering their families and neighborhood. All of them are first generation earners and looking forward to sustaining their family.
