Bangladesh Flood Relief 2016

Summary

This project will being emergency relief to families in the areas served by the main Adult Literacy and village primary school project. Flooding now has moved to new areas and the situation in these different districts is getting worse as people's way of life in these areas is badly affected. Many primary schools, colleges and educational centers have been inundated in floodwater, with their regular activities disrupted. Two of HRDP's primary schools have been affected by the floods.

Challenge

Tropical storm Roanu caused severe flooding and landslides in Bangladesh. As of August 3rd, some 3.2 million people across 16 districts are affected. 42 deaths have been recorded, mostly drowned minors. Nearly 7,400 people have sought refuge in 69 flood shelters and some 250,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged. The main needs are food, water and emergency shelter. Humanitarian partners and the government have so far been unable to reach those affected with sufficient aid deliveries.

Solution

Our partner in Bangladesh HRDP wants to distribute food and basic medicine to at least 200 families. There is a tremendous need but they want to provide emergency aid to families in the different districts where we work. Each family will receive a food package with rice, dal, vegetables, oil sugar and salt as well as re-hydration packs (for those with diarrhea) The total cost of providing emergency assistance to 200 families, is $16,800, averaging $84/family, with 4-5 members each.

Long-Term Impact

These flood relief supplies will help families in the affected communities where HRDP works to get through this difficult time so that they will be ready to continue with the Adult Literacy Classes and Village Primary Schools once the waters recede. The challenges of poverty are only made harder by times of flooding which makes the work quick resumption of these classes and schools and important objective so that the benefits which will come through this education can still be realized.
