The project provides balanced diet school meals for up to 1000 kids living in a slum in Lagos, Nigeria. These kids are primarily internally displaced children. In a bid to survive, they stay out of school to raise money to eat by selling small items on the street. This impedes or terminates their schooling. Their parents cannot afford to feed them a balanced diet and so they are malnourished. Balanced school meals will enhance their brain development and help them stay in school.
About 75% of people living in urban areas in Nigeria are either living in slums or sub-standard shelters. The children are the most affected, living in poor health conditions with malnutrition and hunger. They fend for themselves and quit school to join parents in seeking food and ways to survive. This exposes them to more problems like early marriage/teenage pregnancy, crime, untimely death, child abuse and illiteracy. The families are stuck in illiteracy and a vicious circle of poverty.
This project will solve this problem by providing nutritious school meals that will help keep the children in school. Children are happier to come to school because they have access to good meals. These balanced meals help them grow well and perform well intellectually. This provides to them the opportunity to finish their education - a platform for other progress in life. By eliminating one of the hindrances to staying in school we will make a huge difference in their lives.
School meals help kids in school and truly change destinies. The incidence of child abuse, child illiteracy, teenage pregnancy/teenage marriage and child crime will reduce drastically.
