Hundreds of kids like Opoku in Ghana do not have backpacks to carry their books. As a result, they carry their books on their head, as they walk to school and back home each day. This project will help to change that by providing backpacks to comfortably hold their books. No child should have to endure the weight of books on their head because of poverty!
Painful headaches! This is what kids in rural Ghana, like 10-year-old Opoku, have to endure on some days from carrying books on top of their heads. This also results in their books wearing out quicker - as they are exposed to wear and tear, rain etc. According to the UN, 3.65 million Ghanaian children are living in poverty (2016). This explains why their parents are not able to purchase the needed backpacks.
Your support of this project will help to provide up to 500 backpacks to kids like Opoku. The backpacks will be purchased locally or shipped from Tennessee. With backpacks, they will no longer have to uncomfortably and painfully carry books on their heads.
Kids will be better able to focus and learn in school. They will not have headaches or be tired from the strain of carrying books.
