Summary

This microproject will transform the school into a safe and supportive environment where every child has access to professional emotional and psychological support. By establishing a dedicated school counselling service, the project will help students overcome the effects of trauma, stress, violence, abuse, family conflict, and other psychosocial challenges that impact their learning and well-being. It will strengthen children's emotional resilience, self-confidence, and life skills.

Challenge

Kannagi Nagar is home to over 100,000 people who were relocated from various slums and riverbank settlements across Chennai. While the community now has permanent housing, many families continue to face the long-term effects of displacement, poverty, unemployment and social instability. Despite sustained efforts by govt depts and NGOs, issues such as alcoholism, substance abuse, domestic violence, crime, family conflict, and emotional neglect remain prevalent. Solution

This microproject will appoint a full-time school counseller who will provide students with a safe confidential, and supportive environment to address their emotional and psychological needs. This qualified counsellor will offer individual and group counselling, life skills education crisis intervention, and regular engagement with parents and teachers to identify and address concerns at an early stage. By providing timely emotional support the project will improve students' mental well-being.

Long-Term Impact

The students will acquire their basic education in this school which will help them to continue their further education and pursue career of their choice and will help them earn a descent salary and support their family.
