A Classroom for Rashan after the Earthquake

A microproject by International Disaster Volunteers (IDV)
A Classroom for Rashan after the Earthquake

Summary

Rashan is 7 and he's a survivor of two Nepal earthquakes. Rashan lives with his family in Bhaktapur. Rashan's school was damaged in the first earthquake and Rashan and his classmates are now struggling to learn in a hot, uncomfortable temporary classroom. This threatens Rashan's future by denying him a quality education. But with your help, we'll provide Rashan with a permanent classroom and give him back the future he deserves.

Challenge

in 2015 Nepal was devastated by two earthquakes in less than three weeks. Over 36,000 classrooms were destroyed or heavily damaged and more than 1 million children, including Rashan, are now learning in terrible conditions. This is causing further harm to Rashan by denying him a quality education. This threatens his future by locking him into a cycle of poverty.

Solution

Your donations will be used to provide a permanent classroom for Rashan. Specifically this project will repair one permanent classroom at the Shree Bim Adarsha school in Bhaktapur. The school's beams and columns were left intact by the earthquake, but many of the walls collapsed. Your donations make one classroom safe and usable by rebuilding and rendering brick walls, and by replacing doors and windows. We'll then paint to make the classroom beautiful.

Long-Term Impact

Your donations will give Rashan back his education and help him escape poverty when he's older. Bhaktapur is not far from Kathmandu but its more rural location means that kids like Rashan are poorer, and more neglected, than those in the capital. By allowing us to provide a permanent classroom for Rashan, you'll ensure he not only recovers from the earthquakes, but also builds a stronger future in the long-term.
