On this year’s Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People, show solidarity by learning about and donating to community-led Palestinian nonprofits.
Every year on Nov. 29, the United Nations observes International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. This day is tied to the anniversary of the partition of Palestine in 1947. In the years that followed, millions of Palestinian people fled their homeland for safety elsewhere. Even to this day, they do not have the right to return to their land. Today, you can show solidarity with Palestinian people by donating to one of these six community-led nonprofits.
1. Provide clean water for children in Gaza.
When Middle East Children’s Alliance asked kids in Gaza schools what they wanted most, the answer was almost unanimous: clean water. Due to sea pollution, high population density, military attacks, and the Israeli blockade, only 5% of water in Gaza is safe to drink. MECA’s Maia Project purifies and desalinates water in Gaza schools. Show solidarity with Gaza’s children.
2. Train women entrepreneurs in Nablus.
Palestinian women are full of creative ideas, but don’t always have what they need to launch their own business. Tomorrow’s Youth Organization trains women to become successful entrepreneurs, boosting the local economy and helping women claim their power. Show solidarity with Nablusi women.
3. Inspire kids through drama in Ramallah.
Theater is a great creative outlet for self-expression, and can be healing if you have undergone trauma, like many Palestinian children. ASHTAR convenes children from throughout the West Bank to expose them to drama, enhance their communication skills, and inspire social change. Show solidarity with West Bank kids.
4. Create rooftop gardens with refugee women in Deheishe.
Refugee camps in the West Bank are overcrowded and lack access to green spaces and fresh food. Karama Organization, in Deheishe refugee camp outside Bethlehem, trains women to manage rooftop greenhouses and grow their own produce. Women use the food to feed their families and neighbors as well as earn extra income. Show solidarity with refugee women.
5. Help save Palestinian villages in the West Bank and Gaza.
Dozens of Palestinian villages face demolition from the Israeli army for lack of building permits, which are impossible to obtain in many areas of Palestine. Rebuilding Alliance brings children to Congress to educate lawmakers about the importance of preventing these demolitions and supporting official aid to Palestine. You can help children share their visions of peace with decision-makers. Show solidarity with Palestinian children.
6. Revitalize Bedouin culture in Bethlehem.
Between urbanization, Israeli land-grabs, and widespread poverty, holding on to the “shepherd’s way of life” is harder than ever, according to Bedouins Without Borders. BWB helps Bedouin women earn sustainable income through learning traditional artisan skills. Show solidarity with Bedouin women.
International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed every year on Nov. 29. Show solidarity today by donating to one of the projects above.
