Remember when we all thought 2020 was an unprecedented year…and then 2021 happened?
From natural disasters to the Delta variant, this year is testing us all. Yet time and again, we’re reminded just how powerful small acts can be.
Raising your voice for a cause you believe in can start a movement. Putting on a mask can save lives. And people coming together can fuel nonprofits serving their communities through all the challenges.
That includes people like Linda, who donated $50 to help feed her neighbors in Northern California who are elderly and don’t have easy access to fresh groceries or even a food bank.
“So often our senior citizens, disabled, and ill are forgotten. If fortunate enough, we will all grow to an advanced age; however, we do not know what physical, mental, emotional, or financial state we will personally be in when that time comes for each of us,” Linda said.
“I just want to be one person to say I see, notice, and think of you.”
By supporting LIFE ElderCare’s program to deliver meals to seniors affected by COVID-19, Linda was noticing people like Lila, a 79-year-old retired third-grade teacher. Lila tries to maintain a healthy diet to manage her high blood pressure, but when the pandemic and subsequent shutdowns started last year, her food supply quickly ran out. She was stuck at home without any family to turn to.
“I was scared, ” Lila said, “I really didn’t know what to do or who could help me.”
LIFE ElderCare started delivering healthy food and socially distanced greetings to Lila—thanks to donations like Linda’s.
The organization’s monthly meal deliveries for seniors have increased by about 5,000 since the start of the pandemic—from 8,000 to 13,000.
Those seniors and many other people still need help as the pandemic continues. Connections like the one between Linda and Lila—extending a hand when we can and reaching out when we need to—will help them get through it.
