Sakena Yacoobi

Sakena Yacoobi is the CEO of the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL), which she founded in 1995 in response to the lack of education and health care that the Afghan people were facing after decades of war and strife. AIL works at the grassroots level to help communities and individuals. Sakena has established four schools, a hospital, and TV and radio stations in Afghanistan. She has six honorary doctorates from institutions, including Princeton University. She has earned numerous accolades and awards for her trailblazing work, including the Sunhak Peace Prize, the Harold W. McGraw Prize in Education, and the WISE Prize for Education. Sakena is also a Skoll Social Entrepreneur, Schwab Social Entrepreneur, Ashoka fellow and was nominated as one of 1,000 women for the Nobel Peace Prize.
