Progress Report for Prenatal Classes

Prenatal Class
Prenatal Class

Our Foundation is profoundly grateful for all your support during this exceedingly difficult year. Thanks to your contribution, FSNF has been able to continue its work through projects focusing on pregnant women, new mothers, and their newborns. During these last 3 months of the year, we have continued the work with the production and publication online of Perinatal Classes on topics including:

  • Baby Blues and postpartum depression
  • Language development of the child at different stages of development through the platform: Ask the Speech Therapist.

These videos and others have been published on our YouTube channel, enabling the material to be accessed by a wide audience, both now and into the future.

FSNF has continued to work with the main Maternity Hospital through the social enterprise the MamiCare Center to come to the aid of all pregnant women so that they can have a safe and healthy start to motherhood. Valuable information is provided on everything that pregnant women need to know to expect in pregnancy, and for them to know how to care for the newborn and their own body.

During this period, Perinatal Classes have been made available to vulnerable women, especially focusing on the Roma and Egyptian communities who live in the neglected suburban areas of Tirana. The feedback from participants has been very positive about the pregnancy and parenting information presented, as well as for all the practical support provided through the provision of the “Boxes of Joy,” which aim to provide for the basic needs for newborns, including newborn clothes and diapers.

Through the influence of social networks and cooperation with other partner organizations, we have managed to support special cases in need in other cities of Albania. We single out the case of a 13-year-old who unfortunately has fallen prey to sexual abuse and at such a young age became the mother of a baby boy who was born in good health. Her family lives in very difficult socio- economic conditions. With divorced parents, she finds herself alone with her son in the face of a very difficult life. She is already sheltered near a church that is providing a safe environment and helping her to meet her basic needs. Our staff has come to her aid through the curriculum that provides information on motherhood and care for the newborn.  As she is so young, she needs a great deal of support through psycho-social counseling. Through one of the “Boxes of Joy”, we were able to help provide for the basic needs of the child. Although in a difficult situation and with very little to depend on, this new mother has expressed gratitude for the support given.

We want to thank you for joining us to make these resources available to new mothers in Albania.

Progress Report, Online Prenatal Classes

Tela*’s daughter was born on the National Daughters Day on September 25th, 2020.  This was to be a day of rejoicing a day of double celebration. Unfortunately, the young mother was left alone with no provisions, no clothing for her baby, no care and assistance, and insecure of her future and if she could return home.  Her trespass? She had given birth to a daughter! Her husband and the rest of the family left as soon as the birth of a daughter was announced.  A sad reality faced by many Albanian women from rural areas where the bearing of a son takes priority over everything.  Sex-selective abortion continues to be a struggle in Albania.

Our staff found Tela’s beautiful baby girl wrapped naked as she was born just with a hospital blanket, no clothes and no diaper.  Tela herself was given sanitary pads from other women sharing her room.

Tela and her daughter become the most recent beneficiary of our baby box as well as additional help in food for the new mom and psycho-social care.  In addition, Tela was also given access to our many pre and postnatal education free access videos!

We have been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of many of you during these trying times.  Regardless of the challenges, many are facing you have continued to support our work and mission to ensure quality healthcare for the most vulnerable women in Albania.  We are deeply grateful for your continued support and contribution, which has helped us reach out to women like Tela.

During this quarter we have continued reaching many women across Albanian speaking regions through our digital library of prenatal, postnatal and pediatric videos.  Another young mom from Kosovo says it all in one of her messages to us: “Faleminderit per keshillat e shumta qe na jepni, une si nene e re dhe pa askend afer meje pas lindjes kam mesuar shume nga ju,” - “Thank you for all of the advice that you share with us, I as a young mom with no one close to me during the birth of my child have learned much from you” M.G Kosovo.

We have continued to add more videos to our youtube channel as well, including advice to parents on child development and play as well as proper speech and communication development. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1UjyxLXV_b6zo3J74QBCYA/videos

We are looking forward to keeping this initiative and building upon it to continue helping women access free and quality healthcare during uncertain times.  Our project still needs $1,158 to be fully funded. Your support during uncertain times like this means a lot! Mother & Child Hospital Foundation Progress Report

Dear Friends,

We trust and pray that this letter finds you and your family in good health!  This has turned out to be one of the most challenging years for many around the globe!  Like most businesses, organizations around the world our small NGO did not go unaffected by the crises posed to us by COVID19.  Despite reduced funding in some of our projects and cuts in staff, our work did not stop! Thanks to your continued generous support and grants generously given by GlobalGiving to our organization we were able to respond to the COVID19 crisis.

At the start of the appearance of the first COVID-19 cases in Albania, followed shortly by the comprehensive lockdown imposed on the country by the government, the Foundation reshaped some of its services to meet an emerging need. In response to countless messages received through our social media from women and beneficiaries, we started an online series of Telehealth consultation titled “Ask the Doctor” and hosted in YouTube.  The series Ask the Doctor is a combination between our existing Perinatal Online Classes as well as building on a telehealth platform.

Additionally, the foundation has worked within the hospital setting and recently through a newly started social enterprise, MamiCare Center, to help increase access of women to safe prenatal care.

  •  Thus far thanks to your sacrificial giving and grants by GlobalGiving we have been able to produce an additional 35 new videos responding to the many questions of expectant and new mothers!
  •  Just during this time, we have served some 7000 women in Albanian speaking regions across media channels by providing access to medical care via telehealth to pregnant and new mothers who are in lockdown due to COVID-19.
  •  We have helped reduce hospital overcrowding and reduced the rate of infection of pregnant women by being a resource for them during this time.

We are looking forward to keeping this initiative and building upon it to continue helping women access free and quality healthcare during uncertain times.

Your support during uncertain times like this means a lot! Thank you for choosing to support our work and mission! https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/empowering-women-in-albania-to-save-their-babies/
