For nearly two and a half centuries, St. George's Society of New York (SGSNY) has dedicated itself to improving the lives of disadvantaged New Yorkers. SGSNY was formed in 1770 as a membership-driven charitable organization with the intent of providing assistance to British expatriates and their families as they immigrated from Great Britain to the United States. SGSNY was formed in 1770 as a membership-driven charitable organization with the intent of providing assistance to British expatriates and their families as they immigrated from Great Britain to the United States. These services ranged from providing coal for families during the winter, free hospital care at St. Luke's Hospital in New York, and assistance finding employment during economic uncertainty, among many other critical services. Simply put, SGSNY is a charity dedicated to enriching the quality of life for people in need throughout the five boroughs of New York. Today, our charitable endeavors primarily focus on three areas: protecting the elderly at risk of homelessness, enabling low-income students to complete their college education and supporting families affected by pediatric cancer traveling to NYC for life-saving treatment. With a staff of five, including one full-time and one part-time licensed social worker, SGSNY provides much-needed support for New Yorkers, specifically with British or Commonwealth heritage, which represents 53 countries across the globe.
