Class at DSF
Every act of giving creates impact. It is more profound when it is towards something vital like education. Education creates opportunities for individuals that did not exist before, empowering not only them but their families as well. Your contribution has created such opportunities for hundreds of students from socio-economically vulnerable backgrounds, and changed the lives of their families. We are thrilled to share that all our students pursuing final year, graduated with flying colours this year and 90% of them are gainfully employed - thanks to you! Your support not only helped them gain a degree, but also equip them with skills, which will help them succeed in their careers of choice!
More than 10 million students graduated from various courses in India for the year 2015-16. With a difficult job market and employers looking for more than just degrees in prospective employees, only 50% of the graduates stand to get gainful employment. Having faced these odds, our student Ashwini, is now successfully employed in a job of her dreams at JP Morgan, India. Ashwini enrolled into our programme in 8th standard, just after she had lost her father. A single parent, her mother struggled to educate her and her twin brother and elder sister, and found support in DSF to fulfil her dream of all 3 children getting an education. Living with her mother, siblings and an ailing grandmother, a cheerful and happy-go-lucky girl, Ashwini had just one goal, to become a banker and make her mother proud. She attended classes regularly at DSF. “I found many mentors here who have shaped me since school. They have been great support systems when I needed it the most” she reminisces. Despite her mother’s health issues and financial condition of her house, she focused on her studies and pursued Bachelors in Commerce with grit. “Through DSF I was part of a mentoring programme at PWC, India. It required me to travel 40 km to and fro from my house, for few days, but it not only gave me lot of exposure, but also gave me an understanding of expectations in corporates and skills required. Soft skills workshops were out of my reach, that’s when DSF conducted finishing school workshops for us. I got to interact with professional trainers and experts, who trained me in various skills, right from communications skills, to how to attend interviews. This gave me confidence and was extremely useful for me when I attended interviews and helped me bag my dream job in such a big organization” says an excited Ashwini.
Being a son of a migrant labourer from a rural area, can limit opportunities leading to a predictable future. Ayyanar, who joined DSF in 8th standard came from one such family, from a village in interior Tamilnadu, where his parents had no education, and were clueless as to what their son’s future could look like. Coming from dire economic conditions, his parents did not think beyond providing two square meals to their children. Unassuming and reticent, Ayyanar, studied in a Tamil medium school. Although he was not very sharp in his academics, he was very good at hands on projects, creating the most complicated models with ease. Recognizing his creative bent of mind and his passion for it, his art teacher at DSF strongly recommended he follow Art as his career. With his parents expecting him to take up a regular job to support the family, it seemed as a far off dream. His financial condition and parents’ aspirations pushing him towards a run of the mill course, DSF’s support enabled him to choose a course he was passionate about. Enrolled for a Fine Arts programme, he started exceling in his studies, scoring distinction every year, which was far above the average marks he scored in 10th standard. His next challenge being English, he took up spoken English classes at DSF for better prospects. Taking up freelance projects for big organizations, he gained exposure and confidence. Today after completion of his BFA, he is employed with a renowned advertising firm, through a DSF contact. “His dream has become a reality. I never thought he would achieve so much in his life” beams his ecstatic mother.
Bright, hardworking and disciplined, is how teachers at DSF describe Sunil Kumar. Sunil is the eldest of two sons in a family of four, where his father is a driver and mother a housewife. Very keen on educating him, his parents enrolled him in DSF in 8th standard. Sunil lives in a small house with just a living room with a partition for a kitchen. Despite not having quiet and enough space to study, Sunil did extremely well in his academics, through sheer focus and determination. Ever keen on grabbing every opportunity to learn, he never missed a single class and workshop in DSF. “I had to pursue diploma instead of pre-university after my 10th standard, as my financial conditions required me to take up employment soon. Pursuing my Diploma in automobile engineering, I needed to equip myself with additional certificates if I had to get a well-paying job. Understanding my need, DSF supported me to pursue a course in a designing software. This, along with soft skills workshops, gave me an edge over others “, says a happy Sunil. Now working as a trainee in Mercedes Benz, Sunil has created a great possibility for himself and his family.
Your support has helped give exposure, polish skills, challenge predictable futures and upskill students from disadvantaged backgrounds, giving them equal opportunity as their peers. Thanks to you, hundreds of students like Ashwini, Ayyanar and Sunil now have a choice and pursue the careers of their dreams, which will transform theirs and their families lives!
Thank you for partnering with us in our mission to make the Right to Education real! We look forward to your continued support in making more dreams a reality!
