Shanghai, China, June 15, 2018 - GlobalGiving announced today its China Office was officially registered in Shanghai, in accordance with the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Administration of Activities of Overseas Nongovernmental Organizations in the Mainland China that came into effect on January 1, 2017. The registration will allow GlobalGiving’s grantmaking and other charity work to continue in China under the supervision of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau (PSB) and its Professional Supervisory Unit (PSU)—Shanghai People’s Association of Friendship.
In May, the administrative office of overseas NGOs of Shanghai Public Security Bureau welcomed Mari Kuraishi, co-founder and President of GlobalGiving, along with Rui Wang, GlobalGiving’s China Office Representative. The PSB confirmed support of GlobalGiving’s operation in Shanghai together with the PSU. “We are very pleased to have the opportunity to work in China. This will allow us to support more nonprofit organizations in the world’s second largest economy,” said Kuraishi.
Since GlobalGiving first began facilitating donations in China in 2008, GlobalGiving has disbursed 185 grants totaling $10,666,415 supporting 68 Chinese organizations in the municipalities of Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin and in the provinces of Hubei, Yunnan, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Guangdong, and Shaanxi. GlobalGiving’s role takes on additional urgency in times of natural disaster, as exemplified after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake when GlobalGiving facilitated several hundred thousand dollars in relief funding. GlobalGiving has pioneered a model of effective, community-led recovery through locally focused grants, advocacy, and training programs in China and around the world.
By registering a representative office in China, GlobalGiving hopes to continue its partnership with funders in China, to find new ways to engage companies in corporate social responsibility, and to support the Chinese social sector. GlobalGiving acts as an intermediary, ensuring that recipient organizations comply with local registration requirements and meet international grantmaking standards.
In Shanghai, GlobalGiving’s largest partner is Ford Motor Company Fund, which supports nonprofits like the local NGO the Non-Profit Incubator (NPI). GlobalGiving provides a critical financial link between Non-Profit Incubator and the Ford Motor Company’s United States-based charitable foundation. GlobalGiving has facilitated $6.3M in funding for Non-Profit Incubator’s work to help Chinese charitable organizations work more effectively and professionally over the last five years.
