The project will provide financial aid for the population affected by the extreme rainfall in Zona da Mata region in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The aid is delivered through our Humanitarian Card, restricted exclusively to food-related purchases, reestablishing dignity of choice for the recipients while also avoiding economic crashes to the local markets by not flooding them with material food donations.
The Zona da Mata region in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, was hit with unprecedented rainfall. Weather reports show the expected rain quota for 6 months was met in only two days. The floods and landslides that followed have killed over 70 people, and dislodged over 6.000.
The Humanitarian Card reestablishes the dignity of choice for those affected, being allowed to use the funds on the card to make exclusively food-related purchases. It also avoids local market crashes by stimulating the local economy and not flooding it with a high influx of material food and water donations.
With the dignity of choice, families can decide how and what to budget on, and provide for their loved ones for the needed duration of the displacement. This reduces stress-inducing factors, reestablishes the sense of community, normalcy and belonging, and allows for more agile rebuilding, as well as mitigating community trauma.
