Summary

Gili Trawangan, a small Indonesian island surrounded by coral reefs and marine life, faces growing waste management challenges that threaten both the environment and local livelihoods. Together with FMPL , Gili Eco Trust is transforming the island's waste system through collection, sorting, recycling, composting, and glass upcycling programs. Your support will help fund essential infrastructure, equipment, transportation, staff training, and community education, bringing us closer to our vision.

Challenge

Gili Trawangan generates around 15 tons of waste daily, putting pressure on its fragile marine and coastal ecosystems. The closure of the island's landfill has created an urgent need for sustainable waste solutions. FMPL currently collects waste across the island and ships around 50 tons of recyclables off Gili every month, but additional investment is needed to expand sorting, composting, recycling, transportation, infrastructure, and community education to achieve a Zero Waste future.

Solution

This project will help transform Gili's waste system through waste separation at source, expanded sorting and composting, recycling, glass upcycling, and improved transportation. Funding will support additional staff, equipment, waste collection vehicles, a barge for transporting recyclables, land for composting and waste processing, and community education. Together, these solutions will reduce pollution, increase recycling rates, create green jobs, and move the island closer to a zero waste.

Long-Term Impact

Our goal is to transform Gili Trawangan into one of Indonesia's leading Zero Waste islands. By investing in infrastructure, education, recycling, composting, and resource recovery, we will reduce pollution, create sustainable livelihoods, protect marine ecosystems, and build a circular economy. Success on Gili can serve as a model for other small islands facing similar waste challenges throughout Indonesia and the wider region.
