Animals that is getting older need more specialized care. We had a tough few week with Napoleon and Faith loosing condition. We got the Onderstepoort veterinary specialist team in under the supervision of Professor Katja Koepel. The animals were sedated by Dr Jana Pretorius and taken to our new clinic. First it was Faith, bloods were taken, x-rays and a sonar. Nothing to be very concerned about. She had a few ulcers in her tummy but that can be treated. Then it was Napoleon. Bloods were taken, and with the sonar it showed he had a lot of fluids around his lungs. They put a needle in to take some fluids out. The colour was disturbing. With the x-ray it showed that his heart is very enlarged and it was confirmed that he is in heart failure. At least we know why he was losing condition. When the blood results of Faith came back, there were more bad news. Faith have kidney failure. She is on medication at the moment but her appetite is not good and she lost weight. For us it is a huge concern. She is so much loved by everyone all over the world. Such a brave cheetah. But what will the next weeks be if she don't improve. JJ was also taken to hospital twice. After Liefie's first cub were born she started to have contractions again, and we rushed her to the vet. There were complications and the 2 cubs died. It broke my heart. Liefie fed JJ for another week when her milk dried up and we had to start hand rearing him as he was loosing weight and crying because he did not get enough milk. After a few days he got lethargig with terrible diahorrea. He had an infection and stayed in hospital for 3 days. He had to go back after 3 days as he did not get better. He is slowly picking up weight and doing better. Our vet bills for this month is over R100 000.00 and we hope that we can rely on our supporters to help us with this burden. It is never nice when any animal get sick.
