Summary

This project will provide mobility devices to children with disabilities in Turkana County to improve access to education. It will identify and assess out-of-school and vulnerable children, provide mobility devices, school uniforms, and learning materials, and support parents with livelihood opportunities. The project will also train parents/caregivers and teachers on inclusive education, conduct community sensitization to reduce stigma, strenthening education and a supportive environment.

Challenge

Many families in Turkana County cannot afford assistive devices due to poverty and only 39% of children attend school. UNICEF (2021) reports 4,573 children with disabilities are out of school, the second-highest county in Kenya. Barriers include poor infrastructure, nomadic migration, lack of trained teachers, discrimination, violence, drought, and food insecurity. Only 50% of children 6-13 access primary school versus 92.5% nationally. Out of school children with disabilities is estimated 4700

Solution

This project will provide 500 children with disabilities in Turkana County with mobility devices to improve access to education. It will include registration and assessments, learning materials, school uniforms, teacher training, psychosocial support for children, and livelihood support for parents/caregivers. The project will also raise community awareness of children's rights, promote disability inclusion, and significantly reduce stigma, creating and strenthening a supportive environment.

Long-Term Impact

This project will address barriers faced by children with disabilities, in Turkana County, including poverty, lack of assistive devices, low school attendance, inadequate accessibility to school, limited trained teachers, , discrimination, and food insecurity. By providing mobility devices, learning materials, teacher training, and family livelihood support, counselling it will increase school enrollment, improve independence, reduce stigma, and strengthening family and community support.
