Let The Girl Be empowers vulnerable girls and teenage mothers in Rural Uganda on the shores of Lake Victoria through 4 programs: Mental Health, Community Outreach Program, Music, Dance, and Drama (MDD), and Self-sustenance Program (Sewing Project). Currently, the girls use a shared toilet, which puts their health and safety at risk. Building a pit latrine will enable us to provide a clean and safe space for the girls.
Let The Girl Be has been working out of a rented office that costs more than $2000/year (almost 40% of the yearly budget). There is no private toilet at the facility. The girls in the program must use a shared facility with other residents (male and female), which is not clean or safe for them. They face harassment and other dangers while using the facilities. They need a private latrine with safe and sanitary conditions.
First, the creation of the pit latrine will give the girls a safe and clean space to take care of their hygiene (including when they menstruate). It will be the first step towards creating a permanent office for the program, which will result in the elimination of the rental expense ($2000/year or 40% of the budget). Land is already owned for the latrine and future office.
As one of the girls in the program said, "Sitting with fellow girls and discuss our issues, has given me confidence to share my challenging issues as a girl, unlike in the past when I used to sit on them and affect me more without any solution to comfort me. My dream with all the girls is to see LEGIBE having a permanent home! This will give us the privacy we need as girls, and also relieve us from the pressure of paying rent bills!"
